Blue Card in Cyprus

On 11 July 2024 the Cypriot Parliament approved a new law regarding the implementation of the EU framework for Blue Cards – a work and residence permit for highly qualified third-country nationals.

The law is now expected to be published in the Official Gazette of Cyprus.

Highly qualified individuals

The Blue Card is a residence permit that gives the right to work in Europe. It can only be obtained by highly qualified professionals whose profession is in demand in the EU.

High qualification is defined as the possession of a higher education qualification of at least three years’ duration. For managers and professionals in the information and communication technology sector it means relevant professional experience of at least three years within the seven-year period prior to applying for a Blue Card.

The Benefits of the Blue Card

The residence permit is issued for the duration of the employment contract, from 1 to 4 years, with the possibility of renewal. The main benefit of the Blue Card is Visa-free travelling, anywhere in the EU.

The Blue Card gives the possibility of relocating the whole family of the applicant.

Card holders are entitled to health insurance, unemployment benefits and paid holidays.

The new provisions by the Cypriot Ministry of Finance, also set the salary threshold for Blue Card applicants at a ratio of 1 to 1.6 to the average salary before tax deductions.
